Suspect Arrested After Crime Spree
 
Burlington, NC | On June 10, 2026, at approximately 5:10 p.m., the Burlington Police Department responded to a series of incidents involving a motorvehicle crash, motor vehicle theft, and the activation of a fire alarm at the Burlington Police Department. Following an investigation, responding officers determined that Jorge De Jesus Yepez Espinola, a 39-year-old male, was involved in a possible motor vehicle crash and subsequently fled the scene. Espinola then stole a nearby work van and drove it to the rear parking lot of the Burlington Police Department before entering the building and intentionally activating the fire alarm in the front lobby.
 
Shortly after the incident, officers located and arrested Espinola in a nearby business. He was charged with Felony Larceny of a Motor Vehicle, Injury to Real Property, and Giving False Fire Alarms. He was issued a court date of June 11, 2026, in the Alamance CountyDistrict Court and was placed under a $5,000 secured bond.
 
Investigators also determined that the vehicle operated by Espinola before the theft of the work van, sustained damage to the driver's side and a tire. Officers have been unable to determine where the crash occurred or what object or property was struck. The vehicle was found in the area of 640 North Church Street, Burlington.
 
The Burlington Police Department is asking anyone who may have witnessed a motor vehicle collision involving a gray Honda Accord or who has information regarding damage to property in the area of 640 North Church Street on June 10, 2026, to contact the Burlington Police Department.

Burlington Police Investigate Shooting

Burlington, NC | On June 4, 2026, at approximately 2:37 p.m., Burlington Police officers responded to the 1700 block of South Mebane Street in reference to reports of a shooting. Responding officers located two men who had been shot at while they were in their vehicle, following an argument with another driver (suspect).

As a result of the investigation, officers identified Jeffrey Javon Veale, a 36-year-old male, as the offender and obtained warrants for his arrest for Felony Discharging a Weapon into an Occupied Vehicle and Misdemeanor Going Armed to the Terror of the Public.

On June 6, Veale was arrested in Greensboro by the Greensboro Police Department and was given no bond for his charges. At this time, there are no other victims or property damage reported, and there is no ongoing threat to the public.

Burlington, NC |On June 3, 2026, at approximately 5:08 p.m., officers responded to Friendly Check Cashing, located inside the Speedway gas station at 653 East Webb Avenue, regarding a report of fraudulent activity.
During the investigation, officers determined that Daniel Howard, a 46-year-old male, attempted to cash a check using another individual's identity. Officers located and detained Howard, and further investigation resulted in his arrest on multiple criminal charges.
 
Howard was charged with:
• Uttering a Forged Instrument
• Identity Theft
• Two (2) Counts of Felony Possession of a Schedule II Controlled Substance
• Possession of Drug Paraphernalia
 
Howard was transported to the Alamance County Detention Center, where he was held without bond pursuant to the provisions of the Pretrial Integrity Act. This investigation remains ongoing. No additional information is available for release at this time.

Burlington, NC | On May 25, 2026, the Burlington Police Department conducted a traffic stop of
the suspect vehicle and recovered evidence from the robbery. As a result of the continued investigation, detectives also executed a search warrant at 1407 Durham Street, where additional evidence related to the case was seized.
 
Richard Lamar Hart, Jr, a 39-year-old male, was arrested and charged with Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon, Possession of a Firearm by a Felon, and Driving While License Revoked.
Hart was transported to the Alamance County Detention Center, where he is currently being held without bond.

Burlington, NC | On May 23, 2026, at approximately 10:30 p.m., officers from the
Burlington Police Department responded to Family Fare, located at 2227 Maple Avenue, in
reference to a reported robbery. Upon arrival, officers spoke with an employee who reported that a suspect entered the business, produced a firearm, and demanded money from the register. No injuries were reported.
 
The preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect is described as a male, approximately 5’09” tall, medium build, believed to be in his late 20s to early 30s, wearing a black hoodie, black jeans, black shoes, and a black ski mask. The suspect fled the scene on foot in the direction of Chapel Hill Road with an undisclosed amount of U.S. currency.
 
There is no additional information available at this time.

Arrests made following a Shooting Investigation
 
Burlington, NC | On May 16, 2026, at approximately 2:51 a.m., Burlington Police officers responded to the 200 block of North Logan Street in reference to reports of multiple gunshots in the area. Responding officers were directed to 212 Adams Street, where they located evidence of a physical altercation and gunfire.
 
During the investigation, officers found a vehicle on Adams Street that had been struck by gunfire. Investigators determined the incident developed from a domestic-related disturbance that escalated into a physical altercation during which the shots were fired. At this time, investigators believe the incident only caused property damage. No injuries related to the gunfire have been reported.
 
As a result of the investigation, Zaymion Robinson, a 19-year-old Burlington resident, was arrested and charged with:
• Assault with a Deadly Weapon
• Discharging a Firearm Within the City Limits
• Injury to Personal Property
 
Robinson was transported to the Alamance County Jail, where he received a $1500 secured bond. He has since been released from custody.
 
In addition, investigators obtained warrants for Dalvin Tyner, a 33-year-old Burlington resident, charging him with:
• Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon
• Communicating Threats
• Going Armed to the Terror of the Public
 
On May 17, 2026, the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office, along with officers from the Burlington Police Department, located Tyner in Burlington. Tyner was arrested and served with outstanding warrants. He was transported to the Alamance County Jail with no authorized bond.

Burlington, NC | On May 9, 2026, at approximately 1:29 a.m., officers with the Burlington Police Department conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle leaving The Peace Center, 2389 Corporation Drive.
 
During the traffic stop, officers conducted a search and located two firearms. Both firearms were illegally concealed, and one was stolen. Both 19-year-old male occupants, Shawn Phillip Morris Jr., and Tahj Naseer Trapp, were arrested and charged.
 
Morris was charged with the following:
• One (1) count of Carrying a Concealed Weapon
• One (1) count of Possession of a Stolen Firearm He was also issued a citation for illegal window tint.
 
Trapp was charged with the following:
• Two (2) counts of Carrying a Concealed Weapon
• One (1) count of Possession of a Stolen Firearm
 
Both subjects were transported to the Alamance County Jail. Morris received an unsecured $10,000 bond and is no longer in custody. Trapp received a $10,000 secured bond.
 
Initial bonds are set by a Magistrate and subject to modification at any time by order of the Court.

Burlington Police Prevents Violent Crime
 
Burlington, NC | On May 8, 2026, Burlington Police officers observed a suspicious vehicle in the 1300 block of Tucker Street. As officers exited their vehicle to investigate, two individuals fled on foot and officers gave chase.
 
After a brief foot pursuit, officers were able to take two suspects into custody. A firearm fell from the waistband of Winstead while an officer was detaining him. A second firearm was later recovered and determined to have been thrown by Shoffner into a neighboring yard during the foot pursuit. The following individuals were arrested:
 
Zion Ladarius Winstead, 22-year-old male, was charged with:
• Felony Carrying Concealed Weapon (2 prior convictions for carrying a concealed weapon)
• Resist, Delay, and Obstruct
 
Dejuan Tre’sean Shoffner, 22-year-old male, was charged with:
• Carrying Concealed Weapon
• Resist, Delay, and Obstruct
 
Both individuals were transported to the Alamance County Jail. Winstead was initially held on a $20,000 secured bond. The bond has since been reduced to a $10,000 secured bond and Winstead has been released from custody. Shoffner was held on a $1,000 secured bond.
 
Initial bonds are set by a Magistrate and subject to modification at any time by order of the Court.

Burlington, NC | On the evening of May 8, 2026, Burlington Police officers observed Malcolm Dupree Odom Jr., an 18-year-old male, conducting apparent drug transactions at Tucker Street Apartments. An investigation of Odom’s actions led to the discovery of a concealed handgun and marijuana in Odom’s possession. He was arrested and charged with the following:
 
• Resist, Delay, and Obstruct
• Felony Possession with Intent to Sell and Deliver Marijuana
• Carrying a Concealed Handgun Odom was transported to the Alamance County Jail, where he was initially held under a $10,000 secured bond.
 
Odum has since been released from custody on a $500 secured bond. Initial bonds are set by a Magistrate and are subject to modification at any time by order of the Court.

During the search, officers located controlled substances and additional evidence consistent with the sale of illegal drugs. As a result, Imari Shonta Mebane, a 29-year-old female, was arrested and charged with the following:
 
• Maintaining a Dwelling for the Sale of a Controlled Substance
• Felony Exposing a Child to Controlled Substances
 
Mebane was transported to the Alamance County Jail and held under a $40,000 secured bond. Initial bonds are set by a Magistrate and are subject to modification at any time by order of the Court.

Burlington, NC | On May 7, 2026, the Burlington Police Department executed a search
warrant at 2417 North Church Street, Lot 5, in reference to alleged possession of child
pornography.
 
Following the investigation, Freddy Mendoza-Valenzuela, a 20-year-old male from
Burlington, was arrested and charged with One (1) Count of Second-Degree Sexual
Exploitation of a Minor. This investigation is ongoing.
 
Mendoza-Valenzuela is being held at the Alamance County Detention Facility under no bond.
Initial bonds are subject to modification at any time by order of the Court. The attached
media release has been reviewed and is approved for distribution. Publication of the
suspect’s name will not identify the victim in this case.

Burlington, NC | On May 5, 2026, at 12:22 a.m., the Burlington Police Department responded to 960 South Mebane Street, Ken’s Cars, to investigate a report of suspicious activity. 911 callers described seeing flashlights and hearing sounds of electrical sawing coming from the premises.

When the officers arrived on scene, two individuals attempted to escape on foot, from East Sixth Street heading to Avon Avenue. After a brief foot chase, officers, including K9 Dax, arrested and charged Billy Grey Cates, 51-year-old male, and Jason Lyle Lunsford, 49-year-old male, with the following:

 • Felony Larceny of Motor Vehicle Parts

• Cutting, Mutilating, Defacing, or Otherwise Injuring Property to Obtain Nonferrous Metals

• Resist, Delay, and Obstruct

Further investigation resulted in the confiscation of two bookbags, one battery-powered saw, and several saw blades. Cates and Lunsford were transported to the Alamance County Jail, where both individuals were held without bond due to pending cases under the Bond Integrity Act. Initial bonds are subject to modification at any time by order of the Court.

Juvenile Faces Gun and Narcotics Charges

On March, 17, 2026, an Alamance County Sheriff's Office School Resource Officer (SRO) opened an investigation of suspicious activity at Eastern Alamance High School. Working with Patrol Deputies and the Sheriff’s Office Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) Task Force Officer, it was determined that a juvenile at the school had been in possession of firearms while off campus.

It was also learned that the juvenile was in possession of firearms which had been modified to function as as a fully automatic weapon. Narcotics were also in the juvenile’s possession, all of which was off campus.

The juvenile has been charged and is under a juvenile secured custody order. The juvenile was taken into custody at Eastern Alamance High School. Because of the juvenile’s age, no identifying information will be released.

It is not believed at this time that an on-campus threat exists.

This remains an active investigation with no additional information provided at this time.

As a proactive measure to maintain school safety, Sheriff Johnson has fully briefed the ABSS Administration.

The Alamance County Sheriff's Office remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all students and staff. Burlington, NC | In August of 2025, the Burlington Police Department began investigating multiple larcenies that occurred at various businesses in the City of Burlington. During the investigation, it was discovered that Shanna Monica Gandy, a 43-year-old female, had committed similar crimes in Alamance and Guilford counties and had multiple outstanding warrants for her arrest.
 
On May 2, 2026, at 6:33 pm, the Burlington Police Department’s Aerial Reconnaissance and Tactical Intelligence Center (ARTIC) was notified that Gandy was around University Drive. Officers located Gandy inside TJ Maxx where she was arrested. A Burlington Police Department K9 conducted an open-air sniff of Gandy’s vehicle and alerted for the presence of the odor of narcotics. A search of Gandy’s vehicle found cocaine and items of retail theft. Gandy has been charged with the following:
 
• Nine (9) counts of Misdemeanor Larceny (Burlington Police Department and Multiple other Jurisdictions)
• One (1) count of Identity Theft (Burlington Police Department)
• One (1) count of Felony Possession of a Class II Substance (Burlington Police Department)
• One (1) count of Possession of Drug Paraphernalia (Burlington Police Department)
• Four (4) counts of Possession/Receiving Stolen Property (Burlington and Greensboro Police Departments)
• Two (2) counts of Felony Larceny (Burlington and Greensboro Police Departments)
• One (1) count of Possessing Stolen Goods (Greensboro Police Department)
• Six (6) counts of Order for Arrest for Failure to Appear
Gandy was transported to the Alamance County Detention Center.

Multiple Arrests from Shooting Investigation
 
Burlington, NC | On April 25, 2026, at 3:17 a.m., the Burlington Police Department received 911 calls about gunshots being heard near the 600 block of Center Avenue. As officers responded to the area, they located multiple spent shell casings on the roadway but did not find any victims or property damage relating to the shooting.
 
On April 28, 2026, Burlington Police officers were working to prevent violent crime, specifically at Tucker Street Apartments, when they observed individuals in a vehicle associated with the shooting. Based on these events, officers from Graham and Burlington Police Departments conducted a traffic stop. Upon making contact with the occupants, they discovered an assault rifle and a stolen handgun.
 
Further investigation resulted in Kasean Thomas Wilkins, an 18-year-old male, being arrested and charged with:
• Going Armed to the Terror of the Public (Burlington Police Department)
• Discharging a Firearm in City Limits (Burlington Police Department)
• Possession of a Stolen Firearm (Graham Police Department)
 
Wilkins was transported to the Alamance County Detention Center, where he is being held without a bond. There were no injuries during this incident, and there is no ongoing threat to the community.
 
Through the investigation of the shooting that occurred on April 25, 2026, officers were able to develop additional information that multiple individuals, armed with weapons, were involved in a disturbance at Tucker Street Apartments. Two juveniles were taken into custody on May 1, 2026, and will be petitioned for charges including Possession of a Handgun by a Minor, Going Armed to the Terror of the Public, and Assault by Pointing a Gun.

Firearm and Drugs Located During Violent Crime Prevention
 
Burlington, NC | Drug dealing is frequently the cause of violent crime, particularly armed robberies and shootings. On April 29, 2026, at 7:47 p.m., Burlington Police officers were working to prevent violent crime when they observed suspected drug activity in the 600 block of Center Avenue involving two separate vehicles.
 
As officers contacted the first vehicle, Torraz Jerquan Henry, a 30-year-old male, attempted to flee on foot from the officers. Henry was detained after a brief foot pursuit, and officers located a stolen firearm in his waistband.
 
Henry was arrested and charged with the following:
• Possession of a Firearm by a Felon
• Possession of a Stolen Firearm
• Carrying a Concealed Weapon
• Resist/Delay and Obstruct an officer Henry is currently being held at the Alamance County Jail under no bond.
 
The driver of the second vehicle, Cory Ledon Wilson, a 32-year-old male, was found to be in possession of illegal drugs. Wilson was arrested and charged with the following:
• Possession with Intent to Sell and Deliver a Schedule II controlled substance
• Possession with Intent to Sell and Deliver a Schedule IV controlled substance
• Possession with Intent to Sell and Deliver a Schedule VI controlled substance
• Felony Maintaining a Vehicle for the Purpose of Keeping and Selling a controlled substance
 
Wilson is currently being held at the Alamance County Jail under a $50,000 secured bond. Initial bonds are set by a Magistrate and subject to modification at any time by order of the Court.
